On November 27, 2018, Boris Paton, a prominent scientist in the field of welding processes, metallurgy and metal technology, Doctor of Technical Sciences (1952), turned 100 years old; President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 1962), the first Hero of Ukraine; Director of the Institute of Electric Welding named after Yevgeny Paton of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 1953); Director General of the Inter-branch Scientific-Technical Complex “E.O. Paton Electric Welding Institute” (since 1986); President of the International Association of Academies of Sciences (since 1993); Member of the Council on Science and Science and Technology Policy under the President of Ukraine (since March 1996); Chairman of the Committee on the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology (since December 1996); Member of the State Commission for Reforming, Development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, other military formations, armaments and military equipment (since March 2003); the first deputy chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development of Ukraine (since May 2003).
B.E. In 1941, Paton graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Electrical Engineering and subsequently defended his Ph.D. thesis on the topic “Analysis of the work of welding heads and their means of food during welding under flux” (1945) and his doctoral dissertation – “Study of the conditions of steady burning of a welding arc and its regulation “(1952).

Boris Paton is an author and co-author of more than 720 inventions (500 foreign patents), more than 1200 publications, 20 scientific monographs. Since 1993, he has been president of the International Association of Academies of Sciences, a member of the academies of sciences in several countries of the world.
For the great merits of B.E. Paton was awarded the Lenin and State Prizes, twice the Hero of the Socialist Labor and Hero of Ukraine, four Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, Friendship of Peoples, Prince Yaroslav the Wise of the V degree.
