Information Technologies in Education
Introduction. Continuing education and lifelong learning is needed to cope with rapid changes in economy and society. E-learning as an overall approach is useful to address mass-scale learning and dealing with flexible access to education. However, an important issue is to identify appropriate class of technologies and specific requirements to them for particular tasks.
Purpose. The purpose of this article is to summarize the results of research in ICT for education that form a theoretical basis for e-learning and to reveal the driving forces for transformations in that field. Understanding the impact of technological innovations and requirements to mass-scale and life-long learning on e-learning implementations will facilitate both the solution of research problems and successful e-learning practice.
Methods. The requirements, recommendations and conclusions are based on literature study, system analysis methods and generalizations. Research results are illustrated by software implementations.
Results. Requirements to e-learning technologies and organization of mass-scale continuous education are suggested based on a study of e-learning research and implementations. Key features and basic components of the alternative electronic education space are identified that can be used in creation of e-learning framework for life-long learning and implementation of specific e-learning tools and services.
Conclusion. The results of the research demonstrate that the efficient implementation of life-long e-learning requires systemic transformation of organizational and pedagogic foundations of learning, scalable approaches, and networked solutions for multi-platform systems. The findings can be used by e-learning developers, decision-makers in educational organizations and other specialists interested in using ICT in education.
