In Commemorial of President of National Academy of Science of Ukraine Academician B.Ye. Paton
On August 19, 2020, at the age of 102, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, twice Hero of Socialist Labor, the first Hero of Ukraine, academician Borys Yevhenovych Paton, died.
Borys Paton was an outstanding Ukrainian scientist in the field of metallurgy, metal technology, electric welding and materials science, Doctor of Technical Sciences, President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1962), the first Hero of Ukraine; Director of the Yevgen Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; General Director of the Interbranch Scientific and Technical Complex “Institute of Electric Welding named after Ye.O.Paton “; President of the International Association of Academies of Sciences; member of the Council for Science and Scientific and Technical Policy under the President of Ukraine; Chairman of the Committee for the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology; member of the State Commission on Reforming and Development of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, other military formations, weapons and military equipment; First Deputy Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development of Ukraine.
B.Ye. Paton graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1941 with a degree in electrical engineer and subsequently defended his Ph.D. thesis on the topic “Analysis of the operation of welding heads and their power supply in submerged arc welding” (1945) and his doctoral dissertation – “Investigation of the conditions of stable burning of the welding arc and its regulation ”(1952).
Borys Paton was the author and co-author of more than 720 inventions (500 foreign patents), had more than 1200 publications in Ukrainian and foreign editions, published 20 scientific monographs. Since 1993, he has been President of the International Association of Academies of Sciences, a member of the academies of sciences in several countries around the world.
For the great services B.Ye. Paton was awarded the Lenin and State Prizes, high titles of twice Hero of Socialist Labor and Hero of Ukraine, four Orders of Lenin, Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, Friendship of Peoples, Prince Yaroslav the Wise of 5th degree.
